Introducing The Budokan of Los Angeles!!!

Good news everyone!

The dream of a sports complex in Little Tokyo is beginning to materialize, with the announcement that The Little Tokyo Recreation Center project is now the Budokan of Los Angeles (BoLA) in this month’s newsletter.

The BoLA will provide a premier venue for karate, kendo, judo, and other martial arts. The BoLA is also capable of housing four adjacent basketball or volleyball courts for large-scale tournaments, leagues, or practices. Meeting rooms and open space (including a rooftop terrace) can also accommodate community events and social service programs.

“Budokan” roughly translates to “martial arts hall” in Japanese. The term “Budokan” establishes a cultural identity for the facility, evoking the spirit of Little Tokyo and its rich history as a part of the Los Angeles community. For more than a century, Little Tokyo has endured constant change, yet has continued to thrive in downtown Los Angeles. As one of only three remaining historic Japantowns in the United States, preservation of Japanese American culture remains a paramount concern for many in the community. The BoLA will ensure a cultural presence in Los Angeles, advancing a decorated legacy of sports in the Japanese American community.

Omega Sigma Tau

The Omega Sigma Tau fraternity of UCLA has been a great help to the BoLA campaign throughout the years. The Omegas have volunteered at many of our past events and have helped with fundraising and outreach. This year, Omega Sigma Tau will provide volunteer help for San Tai San and other Children’s Day festivities, so look for them working hard on May 1st! The Omegas also organize the Battle Royale dance competition, the proceeds of which will benefit the Budokan of Los Angeles.

A big thanks to Omega Sigma Tau; the BoLA campaign would be far more difficult if not for your help!

Guitar Hero

Guitar Hero is a series of music video games first published in 2005 by RedOctane and distributed by Activision in which players use a guitar-shaped peripheral to simulate the playing of lead and bass guitar across numerous rock music songs. Players match notes that scroll on-screen to colored fret buttons on the controller, strumming the controller in time to the music in order to score points and keep the virtual audience excited. The games attempt to mimic many features of playing a real guitar, including the use of fast-fingering hammer-ons and pull-offs and the use of the whammy bar to alter the pitch of notes.

With the introduction of Guitar Hero World Tour in 2008, the game includes support for a four-player band including vocals and drums.

The game currently has four major releases and three expansions on gaming consoles, and with spinoffs for Windows and Macintosh systems, mobile phones, the Nintendo DS, and an arcade game, with several more titles announced for future release. The Guitar Hero franchise has become a cultural phenomenon and learning and development tool for medical purposes, and has revolutionized the modern music industry. The series has sold 24 million units, earning US$1.6 billion at retail; The third game in the series, Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock is the first single video game to exceed $1 billion in total sales.
